Description

The Product Manager will takes a long-term view of the IT portfolio for a given area of the business and engages with business management and executives to refine it to maximize benefits at a sustainable ongoing cost. Leads teams, focused on a particular area of the business, to deliver value through software solutions, whether developed in-house, developed externally, or through the use of third-party software. Particularly oversees the strategy and roadmap for APIs managed as products for internal or external consumers. Responsible for understanding API product consumers’ needs and prioritizing enhancements. Measure and communicate the business value of API products to senior stakeholders, and evangelize the use of API products in development teams.

Essential Roles And Responsibilities

  • Work with IT leaders, business leaders, and developers to select which APIs should be treated as products, based on the API’s potential to be reused outside the context of one application.
  • Develop strong relationships with API product consumers (e.g., developers or development teams using the API product) to understand their needs.
  • Develop and curate a roadmap for the API product, using input from consumers to plan enhancements and improvements.
  • Define and measure meaningful business key performance indicators (KPIs) for the API product.
  • Communicate the business value of the API product to relevant stakeholders, including business and IT leaders.
  • Collect data against defined metrics, and use metrics to determine opportunities to improve the business value of the API product.
  • Evangelize the use of the API product with development teams to increase the adoption and consumption of API product capabilities.
  • Ensure consumers have the information and resources they need to use the API product, such as access to APIs, interactive documentation to help them understand API operations, and code samples or SDKs (Software Development Kits).
  • Provide support to API product consumers by answering questions and responding to feedback.
  • Oversee the API product throughout its lifecycle, including managing API versioning and decommissioning.
  • Develop and maintain API specifications and documentation.
  • Ensure alignment and adherence to corporate, financial and IT standards (e.g., architecture, compliance, security).
  • Research and evaluate new API trends.
  • Identify opportunities to monetize API products.
  • Share ownership and responsibility with other Product Managers for direction, consistency, quality and management of APIs
  • May participate in business area meetings and committees in order to understand the business context surrounding eventual IT-related decisions
  • Participates in innovation sessions when faced with new and/or significant business needs that involve IT but aren’t met by the existing IT portfolio
  • Interacts periodically with end users of software applications and not only with business management and executives
  • Receives requests for work from the business and coordinates the product team’s resources to perform that work
  • Learns about the business’ priorities of both IT-related activities and where those activities are in the business’ overall list of priorities
  • Manages the work of the product team, whether through task assignments, formal project management, Agile methods, or other suitable approaches

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field and eight to ten years’ relevant experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of twelve years’ relevant experience.
  • Five years of applicable business or system development experience and two years of team lead or management experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
